Pioneer Develops Dual-layer Recording Technology for DVD-R
Realizing the recording capacity of up to 8.5GBytes on a single side
Pioneer today announces that it has developed DVD-R dual-layer recording technology for DVD-R media that will soon enable end users to write up to 8.5Gb of data on a single side of the disc.
The new dual-layer recording technology, which adopts the dye-recording-film layer method, achieves a 9.34 percent jitter with a 17.3 percent reflection rate on the first layer (L0) of a disc, and an 8.08 percent jitter with a 19.5 percent reflection rate for the second layer (L1). This replicates the performance levels of pre-pressed dual-layer DVD-ROM discs ensuring that DVD-R media supporting dual-layer recording technology can be played back on most existing PC DVD-ROM drives DVD players, and DVD recorders (1) which already support the playback functionality of pre-pressed dual-layer DVD-ROM discs.
In the rapidly expanding DVD recorder market, strong end user demand has emerged for DVD media that offers greater recording capacity with improved picture quality. Pioneer's new technology will allow users to record programmes of up to four hours in standard play mode, or up to 12 hours in the extended play mode with DVD recorders.
The company intends to propose DVD-R dual-layer recording as a new disc format
to the DVD Forum after making final refinements to the specifications.
