Is it possible to view the image of the rear camera without putting the car into rear gear?

Yes. Use the view modes and choose rear view. Here you can see the rear camera and navigation without putting the car in rear gear.

AVIC-HD1BT, AVIC-HD3BT, AVIC-D3, AVIC-X3: Press the MAP button (twice) and select rear view.
AVIC-X1 series: Press the POS button (twice) and select rear view..
