All about DVD-R/RW
The DVD-R/RW writer opens up a new horizon.
With the coming of the digital millennium, we will experience daily evolution in both office work and home entertainment. All document flow will come in digital format. Still and motion pictures will be digitised.
Wherever you are, there will be a need for higher data capacity either for storage or for distribution. Ideally, the medium should be light-weight, take less time to create, and remain playable on hardware commonly available in the market. DVD-R/RW media and Pioneer's DVD-R/RW writer are the solution to these needs.
DVD-R/RW media's wide playback compatibility is the key advantage provided by the DVD-R/RW writer. Recorded DVD-R/RW discs can be read by most DVD-ROM equipped PCs. Furthermore, if the video material is recorded in the DVD-Video format, the y can be enjoyed on consumer DVD-Video players. *Not only can Pioneer's DVD-R/RW writer record to DVD-R/RW media, but it can also record to CD-R/RW media, making it a versatile multi-functional writer. ** The barrier between the PC and Home Entertainment is fading, and Pioneer's DVD-R/RW writer will help achieve this ultimate goal.
Why Pioneer DVD-R/RW
There are many advantages to the DVD-R/RW format and the Pioneer DVR-A03 drive. At a glance:
The drive:
The media:
Key features DVR-A04:
Together with the 'Zero Link' function for DVD-R/DVD-RW, the DVR-A04 now has 'Buffer Underrun Free' functionality for CD-R/CD-RW writing.
The 'Buffer Underrun Free' function is physically supported by the newly employed NEC chip.
High Speed CD-RW Support.
The DVR-A04 is equipped with 4X writing for use with High Speed CD-RW disc media.
So what is 'High Speed' CD-RW disc media?
The 'High Speed' name is given to a CD-RW disc that is manufactured using a special dye material, tuned for 'High Speed Writing'. The ideal solution for CD-RW was to cover writing speeds between 1X and10X by a single CD-RW disc type. However, physically this was not achieved. It was named 'High Speed' from the stand point of 'marketing purposes'.
Because the 'HS' media is coated by a special dye, the laser power of writers have also to be fine tuned. This 'writer laser power control' is what we call 'Write Strategy'.
There are two types of CD-RW media: 'High Speed' CD-RW and so called 'Conventional' CD-RW
While 'High Speed' covers 4X - 10X writing speeds, conventional CD-RW media covers 1X - 4X writing speeds. 4X writing co-exists for both types of RW discs. Please note that the DVR-A04 covers both media types at 4X.
Just like the DVR-A03 there is a fan installed at the back of the DVR-A04 drive body. This fan is used to keep the 'Laser Pick-up' cool by generating an airflow through the inside of the drive unit cavity via the front bezel slots. The new fan installed in the DVR-A04 has a 'Sleeve Bearing' instead of the conventional 'Ball Bearing'. This yields lower running noise and longer lifetime for the fan within the DVR-A04 compared with the DVR-A03's fan.
Also the DVR-A04 has a new function called 'Active Fan'. This function stops the fan when no heat is sensed and then restarts the fan when heat is re-sensed.
Vertical Installation Adopted.
Recently, more slim-type Desktop PC's have emerged onto the market.
The 'Vertical Installation' feature of this drive is to meet this trend. PC Manufacturers Sony and NEC have now released PCs with their drives vertically installed.
'Disc Clips' located on the loading tray of the DVR-A04 enable the disc to be inserted vertically.
10mm Shorter.
The DVR-A04 drive has been designed 10mm shorter than our previous drives.
This makes it even easier to install the drive in the PC and also even easier to 'cable the drive' upon installation.
6X (CAV) DVD-ROM Read Speed.
The DVR-A04 drive has a higher rotational speed than the DVR-A03 for reading DVD-ROM's.
Because of this higher rotational speed the drive is able to read DVD-ROM's at '6X'. (The DVR-A03 was '4X')
(CAV: Constant Angular Velocity)
Application Possibilities
Add video to make dynamic image mixed presentations and demonstrations
There are some things that just can't be represented with still pictures. Adding video to presentations can make ideas easier to understand.
Record the growth and development of your children from year to year
As if trying to record your children isn't difficult enough, finding a play-back environment and hoping the image quality hasn't degraded over the years is. But considering the widespread availability of DVD play-back environments and the longevity of DVD-R/RW media, neither should be a problem.
Make archives of your personal video collection
Existing videos that contain once-in-a-lifetime events may well suffer degradation in playback quality. By transferring them to DVD-R/RW, precious video collections can be preserved to enjoy again and again, without loss of playback quality.
Send 'DVD letters'
Keep in touch with friends and relatives by sending them 'DVD letters'. By recording in the DVD-Video format, they can see your greetings on a DVD-Video player or DVD-ROM equipped PC.
Backup large data volumes
DVD-R/RW both offer 4.7GB data storage capacity; seven times the data storage capacity of a CD-R/RW - sufficient for large data backup.
Digital photography
Due to an increase in usage of digital photography and increased resolution hence file size, DVD-R/RW is the perfect partner for storing digital images.
