Advanced encoder technology guarantees stunning video. Combining Single- Pass Variable Bit Rate Control with Multi-Resolution, Pioneer DVD recorders perform ideal video image compression encoding for dramatically improved picture quality. On “VR Mode” DVD-RW discs, multi-resolution technology uses three-quarter and two-third resolution settings, in addition to full and halfresolution. This means less abrupt changes in quality over longer recording times.

    Recording Time
There are four preset recording quality modes:

FINE : Highest quality setting, gives about 1 hour of recording time on a DVD disc.
SP : (Standard Play) – Default quality, sufficient for most applications, gives about 2 hours of recording time on a DVD.
LP : (Long Play) – Slightly lower video quality, but doubles the recording time on a DVD to around 4 hours.
EP : (Extended Play) – Use when maximum recording time is most important; EP gives you around 6 hours of recording time on a DVD disc.

In addition to these settings, you can access 32 different recording quality/time settings when manual recording mode is on giving you very fine control over the recording.

The table below shows the approximate recording times for all of the 32 manual recording modes, as well as the standard recording mode equivalents.

  • MCACC Yes (Advanced, 7-band)

MCACCMCACC stands for Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration System.

It's an automatic sound field adjustment system that enables you to precision-tune your system to your living room, just like a sound professional, but with minimum effort.

A microphone monitors the sound environment and an equaliser (either 5 or 9-band, depending on which model of amplifier you have) optimally adjusts the sound parameters.

The result sounds like a professional recording engineer has fine-tuned your amplifier or home cinema system.

MCACC was created as a joint effort between ourselves and professional sound engineers at AIR Studios; it's unique to Pioneer, so you won't find it on any other products.

  • RDS Tuner (FM/AM) Yes

This convenient function of RDS with EON can switch the tuner automatically to a station on a network the moment it starts broadcasting your specified type of programming - even while you are listening to another source such as LD, radio, CD or cassette, etc.

  • Power Consumption (in use / standby) 58W / 0.69W

Sustainable Energy EuropeCaring for the environment is important. It's why we are a Sustainable Energy Partner of the European Commission.

What this means is that we've committed to reduce power consumption in standby modes. The less energy we consume, the better for the environment.

Surround Sound

  • Dolby Pro Logic Surround Yes

  • Dolby Pro Logic Surround II Yes

  • Dolby Digital Yes

The current surround sound quality decoding standard, Dolby Digital means movie theatre sound performance for a home cinema. The listener will be wrapped in surround sound by 5.1-channel audio sound compression technology.

Depending on the speakers, the front left and right, centre, rear left and right speakers can span frequencies from 20 Hz - 20 kHz and there is a dedicated subwoofer channel for additional low frequency sound effects. Extra features mean not only stunning soundtracks but also additional language tracks on one disc.
  • Dolby Digital Plus Yes

  • Dolby TrueHD Yes

  • DTS Digital Surround Yes

DTS 5.1-channel playback decoding technology has rapidly gained popularity thanks to its dynamic sound impact that flies at the listener from left, right and centre surround speakers.
Open up the doors of digital home cinema and super surround sound with any Pioneer DVD-Video player and A/V amplifier/receiver which can handle DTS and DTS ES encoded digital audio data streams.
  • DTS-HD Master Audio Yes

  • Surround Modes
    • 3 modes for Surround sources: auto, standard decode and stereo
    • 8 modes for Stereo sources: Auto, Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Pro Logic II Movie, Dolby Pro Logic II Music, Dolby Pro Logic II Game, NEO:6 Cinema, NEO:6 Music and Stereo

    Advanced Movie:
Reproduces a mid-sized movie theatre environment.

    Advanced Music:
Simulates the acoustic environment of a large concert hall.

    Expanded:
This mode is especially designed to give sound depth to stereo sources. The overall effect builds a dynamic and broad sound space, allowing two-channel (stereo) signals to imitate a five speaker sound. Use with Dolby Pro Logic for a stereo surround effect. You can also use with Dolby Digital sources for a wider stereo field than the Surround modes.

    Sports mode:
Sports lovers will want to use this mode when watching their favourite game. It gives you the impression that you're at the statium, in the middle of the action.

    TV Surround:
You can use this mode to give surround sound to mono or stereo TV audio sources.

    Phones Surround:
This is very similar to the Virtual Surround mode, and is available when you're listening through headphones to create an overall surround sound effect.

    5-Channel Stereo:
This can be selected to give powerful multi-speaker sound to a stereo source with equal power delivered to all the speakers. It is especially suited to music sources with deep bass and a strong rhythmic feel.

    Virtual Surround:
When you select this mode, you will hear a surround sound effect produced from the two front speakers only. When selected, you won't hear any sound from the other speakers in your system.

    Virtual Surround Back:
The Virtual Surround Back effect simulates 6.1 surround channel listening, giving the impression that there is a surround back speaker in your system when listening to a 5.1 channel source.

    Dialogue Enhancement:
With Dialogue Enhancement mode, centre channel sounds appear to project from the TV, i.e. at ear level, for enhanced dialogue reproduction.

  • VPS / PDC Yes

Pioneer DVD recorders are crammed with features for smooth recording from terrestrial or cable TV. They record digital broadcasts from a connected settop box or TV with integrated digital tuner. To make sure you don't miss the end of programmes that may run late (a live football match, for example), you can take advantage of the PDC/VPS system for up to 8 of your timer recordings. All you have to do is to input the correct announced time and date of the programme you want to record.
  • G-Link™ Yes

HDD Functions

  • Grouping Yes

The large capacity of the Hard Disk Drive means that there may be many hours of video in the recorder. To help you organize your Hard Disk Drive video content there are four ‘groups'. You can move content from group to group, and rename the groups as you want. You can also use group icons, such as a heart or spade.
  • Maximum number of titles 999

  • One Touch Copying Yes

While browsing through recordings made on the Hard Disk Drive, it is possible to copy them directly to a DVD-R/DVD-RW disc. It simply takes a push of the 'One-Touch Copy' button on the remote control. This high-speed copy mode copies the entire programme from beginning to end.

  • High Speed Copying Yes

To archive recordings, Pioneer's Hard Disk Drive DVD recorders can fast-copy files without any quality loss.
The high-speed copying process is extremely fast. Using a 8x DVD-R disc, the copying speed in 'Video Mode' ranges from 8x to 48x speed, while a 4x DVD-RW disc covers 4x to 24x. That means that a copy of a recording can now be made at up to 48 times the speed of the programme's real time duration. For example, a one-hour programme recorded in EP recording mode can be copied onto a DVD-R disc in about 1.25 minutes. DVD-R/DVD-RW discs can be enjoyed in numerous DVD players from an in-car system or portable computer to a portable DVD player*.
Furthermore, high speed copying from DVD-RW discs in VR mode to the built-in Hard Disk Drive is also possible.
Users can also re-encode the original HDD recording while making a copy to a DVD disc in real time. For instance, when a recording made in FINE mode on the HDD is too big to be copied on the disc, it can be re-encoded in a lower recording mode to make it fit on the DVD disc.

    * DVD-RW discs recorded in 'VR Mode (DVD Video Recording Mode)' mode can be played back on 'RW-Compatible' players only.

    1) The number of titles which can be recorded on the Hard Disk Drive is limited up to 250 titles, even if there's still more recording time available.
    2) The actual speed depends on the recording mode and media used. Up to 48x high-speed copy can be reached when content is recorded in EP mode and copied to 8x DVD-R media.
*Approximate copying time. Additonal time will be required, e.g. to create disc management information.
  • Optimised Copying / Recording Yes

You can choose to copy material at a different recording quality from the original. For example, you might want to copy a FINE mode (highest quality) recording on the Hard Disk Drive to SP (standard play) quality on a DVD so that you can fit other recordings on the same disc.
  • Rate Conversion Copy Yes

  • Disc Backup Yes

The DVD Disc Backup feature offers a convenient way to backup important material on DVD to another recordable DVD disc. The material is first copied from the DVD disc to the HDD, then on to a second DVD disc. While the contents of the original disc are temporarily stored in the HDD, they cannot be played nor edited. All contents and information from the original DVD disc are backed up without any quality loss. During DVD disc backup, recording to the HDD or playback of other content from the HDD is possible.

Note: This feature only works with finalised DVD-R-DVD-RW discs recorded in 'Video Mode (DVD Video Mode)'.
  • Recovery Recording Yes

When a timer recording is set to use DVD but the disc loaded at the time of the recording is unrecordable, the program will automatically be recorded to the Hard Disk Drive.

How do Pioneer DVD players overcome this problem to unleash more magnificent brilliance, depth, and detail in every colour? Pioneer D/A conversion upgrades 8-bit Y/C signal data to 10-bit data to maintain data integrity and reproduce images that are truer to the DVD source.
